Robotics industry was missing the layer of Tier-1 module suppliers, which is well established in more mature industries. Even though there are easy-to-integrate subsystems, every other robot OEM started building their subsystems from scratch while experiencing again the same steep learning curve. This tended to make projects time-consuming or let them even completely fail.

Joint modules are self-contained subsystems with an easy technical interface. Hence, the Tier-1 layer emerges with very narrow niche focus, technology platforms, and well-established production processes. Hence, the robotics supply chain matures to where module suppliers can produce more efficiently and with better results so that OEMs can focus on their actual USPs.
